in paul ryan's home state of wisconsin. 51-43. a new quinnipiac/"new york times"/cbs news swing state poll shows president obama leading in ohio with likely voters 50 to 45. a tighter race in virginia. president obama at 49, mitt romney at 47, which is a statistical tie within the poll's 3% margin of error. and in florida that poll has president obama at 48 and mitt romney at 47. another statistical tie. tonight nate silver of the "new york times'" 538 blog forecasts that on november 6th president obama will win 300 electoral college votes and mitt romney will win 238 and president obama's chance of re-election ticked up tonight in nate silver's calculations to 78.4%. and finally, george w. bush has entered the presidential campaign. he did that today when he was dragged into it by his little brother in florida. >> do you honestly think that this president is capable of bringing people together? his entire strategy is to blame others. starting with my brother, of course. basically, he blames every possible thing, rather than having the humility to be able to reach out and define common gro

the republicans are better? of course not! they're ten times worse. so look at ryan's proposal. what does he do? he would cut 14.6% and he would cut noaa's satellite program by $250 million. and if you think ryan's proposal is bad wait until you get a load of romney's proposal. in order for romney's budget to work, he would cut nondefense entitlement spending which is where fema is by 40%! so unfortunately, this is exactly where we are. stuck between a rock and a hard place, between the guy who would cut us 3% and the guy who would cut it 40%. when you have those choices well it's clear. now, by the way president obama in this case has done a terrific job. when we had bill clinton in charge fema strengthened, terrific job. you have to call it as it is. you don't call it -- you don't call it balanced when it's not balanced. everybody remembers what happened under hurricane katrina under george w. bush, it was an absolute disaster because the guys don't believe in government. so when you put them in charge of governmen

the republicans are withstanding the attacks on the ryan budget, the medicare attacks, but governor romney would like that lead among older, more reliable, more republican voters to be a little bit bigger than 52-46. that's one thing he needs to work on. this is significant. like in michigan, the auto bailout plays big in ohio and look at this. you might say the president's only getting 41% of white men, 46% of white women. that's actually a good number. if the president can keep above 40% among whites overall and above 40% among white men, it's pretty much game over in the electorate. this is a statistic we will watch as we get closer to election day. if the president is above 40 among whites, especially above 40 among white men, in most states he would be well on his path to victory. you siee this more and more in industrial states affected by the auto bailout, the president runs stronger among white men. if that poll were to hold up, can governor romney get to 270 without ohio and how much easier is it for the president to get to 270 with ohio? let's start with the president. he's at 237 righ

days. i sent ryan there for 19 events and the president has been there seven times for 10 events. no republican has ever won the white house without ohio, no democrat has done it since jfk. ohio is an important state. when we talk about the state we haven't discussed in this table is the importance of a ground game. the having field offices throughout a state and the things that they can do getting people to the polls and getting information about the candidates. obama's lead in the ground game is massive. obama has 800 field offices throughout the nation, romney only has 300. in ohio the difference is massive, 137-39. this continues throughout the states. you see ohio, florida, colorado. obama's lead is massive. obama built the largest grassroots organization that politics saw in '08 and after he won he continued to build it. this can make a difference of two points and in a close race like this it can make all the difference in '08. it gave obama some already. that's not the situation in this case. people that have been to the ground offices say the obama offices are all about
decisive action when lives are at risk. unlike mitt romney and paul ryan, who said that they would bloc grant fema funding to states. states are having fiscal problems and that responsibility would fall to them. it's so unfortunate that we have people that take these ex prem p -- extreme positions just to score political points. when you're in harm's way you don't want a private company that's trying to save money. you want a government that will do what is required to save lives and that's not the policy that mitt romney or his twin paul ryan have advanced while they have been in office. they have done just the opposite unfortunately. >> mayor reed, i'm sorry to press you on this, but isn't that the point of the way these gentlemen have been speaking? this is their patently clear philosophy, and yet when it collides with reality on a day like this, it's not something that the people of america like at all. the idea that we're going to make the responsibility for emergency relief not just in the hands of the states but preferably according to mr. romney in the hands of private businesse
